Real-World Use Cases

Homework Assignments to Supplement Language Center Students

Language Center Manager

20 minutes/day

An English communication center for professionals wants students to practice more between class sessions.

Problem

Students only practice speaking English in 2 classes each week, which is not enough to improve real conversational responsiveness.

Solution

Assign roleplay exercises on Duolingo Max as mandatory homework, allowing students to practice situational dialogues with AI before class.

Students' speaking practice time increases by an additional 40 minutes each week
Scores on communication responsiveness assessment show significant improvement after 6 weeks
Completion rate of homework assignments increases from 55% to 80%
Teachers have streak data to monitor student attendance level

English Learning Benefits for Import-Export Staff

HR Manager

15 minutes/day

A trading company that has just expanded into the international market needs sales staff to confidently communicate in English with partners.

Problem

Employees do not have the time and budget to take formal English classes, while the job requires emailing and calling foreign clients.

Solution

Provide Duolingo Max accounts for the entire sales team, encouraging daily role-playing of negotiation scenarios and work exchanges.

80% of employees maintain a continuous learning streak after 1 month of implementation
The number of basic communication errors in work emails has significantly decreased
The cost of English training has reduced by over 60% compared to hiring private teachers
Employees are more confident when calling international clients directly

Pros

The 'Explain My Answer' feature analyzes mistakes in the context of each learner's responses
The 'Roleplay' feature allows for realistic conversation practice with AI taking on characters in specific situations
Builds on the proven gamification mechanisms of Duolingo (streak, XP, leaderboards)
A clearly tiered learning path, making it easy for beginners to track progress
Offers dozens of languages to choose from within the same app
Smooth mobile app, allowing learning anytime, even without temporary internet connection for downloaded lessons

Cons

Max features (roleplay, answer explanation) are only available for certain language pairs and do not cover all courses
The Max subscription price is significantly higher than the regular Duolingo Super plan
Content still leans towards basic vocabulary and grammar, not deep enough for advanced learners or certification test preparation
AI responses in roleplay can sometimes feel mechanical and lack the naturalness of conversation with a real person
Not focused on academic writing skills or specialized workplace communication
Effectiveness heavily depends on maintaining daily learning, which can lead to loss of motivation when streaks are broken
