Look up the paper by author name, title, or DOI on Scite.

Paste the title or DOI of the paper into the search box to open the detailed page of that paper.

Use DOI instead of the title to avoid confusion when there are multiple papers with the same name.

View the Smart Citations Tab

Check the number of citations classified as supportive, refuting, or merely mentioning.

Open the Smart Citations tab to see the chart categorizing the citations of the paper.

Pay attention to an unusually high rate of refuting citations (contrasting) compared to the total number of citations.

Check the Retraction Warning Flag

Confirm whether the paper has been retracted or officially corrected.

Look at the warning section at the top of the paper's detail page to check for a Retracted or Correction label.

Never use a paper labeled as Retracted as a basis, even if it still appears in other search results.

Install Quick Check Extension While Reading

Install a browser extension to check paper reliability while reading on other pages.

Note the Verification Results

Record the reliability assessment of each paper for reference when drafting formal documents.

Briefly note the reliability level (strong support, contentious, refuted) next to each source in the reference list.

Prioritize citing papers with a high support rate and no significant refuting research.
