Connect Data Source

Link Tableau with business data from Excel, Google Sheets, or company database.

Open Tableau Desktop/Cloud, select "Connect to Data", choose the type of source (Excel, SQL Server, Google Sheets), and log in if necessary.

Ensure the source data is cleaned, with no empty cells or incorrect date formats before import.

Create First Chart Using Drag-and-Drop

Build the first worksheet displaying key business metrics like revenue over time.

Drag the "Date" field into Columns and the "Revenue" field into Rows to let Tableau automatically create a basic line chart.

Try changing the chart type (bar, line, map) using the Show Me panel to find the most suitable visualization for the data.

Ask Questions Using Ask Data

Use the natural language query feature to quickly generate a chart that answers specific questions.

Open Ask Data on the connected dataset, type a question like "revenue by region this quarter" to receive an instant suggested chart.

Name data fields clearly and understandably (e.g., "Revenue" instead of "Col_5") for Ask Data to interpret questions accurately.

Combine Worksheets Into a Dashboard

Aggregate individual charts into an overview dashboard that is easy to follow.

Create a New Dashboard, drag and drop each created worksheet onto the canvas, arranging the layout according to the priority of information.

Place the most important chart in the top left corner as this is where the viewer's eyes typically look first.

Set Up Interactive Filters

Allow viewers to filter data by region, time, or product without editing the original dashboard.

Select the field to filter, right-click and select "Show Filter", then set this filter to apply to the entire dashboard.

Limit the number of visible filters (3-5 main filters) to avoid overwhelming non-expert users with the dashboard.

Publish and Share With Team

Upload the dashboard to Tableau Server or Tableau Cloud so the whole team can access it.

Select Server > Publish Workbook, choose the target project and set viewing permissions for each user group.

Set up an automatic data refresh schedule (extract refresh schedule) to ensure the dashboard always displays the latest data.
